Polio loomed over the early 20th century. While polio was asymptomatic up to 99% of the time, it caused paralysis and “iron lung” breathing machines were used to keep sufferers alive. FDR contracted polio and still went on to become President. The great scientist Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine in the 1950s. Salk also offered this wisdom: “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality."
